Excelsior Springs, Mo. – Washburn could not overcome five turnovers as they fell 36-23 to Bemidji State in the Mineral Water Bowl in Excelsior Springs, Mo.
The Ichabods struck first as Derek McGinnis hit Carey Woods for a 47-yard pass that set up a nine-yard strike to Bryce Chavis making it a 7-0 lead. Following a turnover by the Beavers, Perry Schmiedeler hit a 25-yard field goal to tack on three more points for WU.
Bemidji got their first score at the 12:36 mark in the second quarter as Jordan Hein hit Blake Holder for a 55-yard pass and catch. After Josh Wright of WU blocked the extra points the Ichabods held onto a 10-6 lead. Bemidji took their first lead of the game with 29 seconds to play in the first half as Jordan Hein rushed in from one-yard out making it a 13-10 halftime spread.
The Ichabods would tie things up coming out of the break as Schmiedeler connected from 39-yards out to make it 13 all. The Beavers would regain the lead at the 10:15 mark in the third quarter as Hein found Christian Lunde for a 23-yard score. The Ichabods would tie it up with 7:11 to play in the third as McGinnis would find Chavis for a nine-yard strike. The Beavers would regain the lead at the 6:56 mark as Hein found Juwaan Richard for a 50-yard pass and catch.
Schmiedeler would cut the lead to four points as he hit a 40-yard field goal with 14:24 to go in the fourth quarter. The Beavers would go ahead by ten as Hein hit Blake Petrich for a three yard score. BSU would then tack on a field goal at the 5:19 mark as Mason Hoffer hit a 22-yard attempt.
For the Ichabods Chavis finished with 40 yards receiving find the end zone twice while McGinnis passed for 174 yards and two scores. On defense Zach Franklin picked off two Beaver passes and Akhmad Abdul-Razzaq finished with nine tackles.
Washburn finishes their season with a 7-5 overall record and a trip to a bowl game.
