Kansas City, Kan. – Emporia State needed a record tying walk-off home run for a 10-9 win to force an if necessary championship game on May 10 in the MIAA Baseball Championship.

Jesse Ralls put the Lions top first as he singled to third base to drive in Richie Gorski. The Hornets would then grab two runs on one play as the result of a wild pitch and an error in the bottom of the third inning and take a 2-1 lead.

Chad Shannon tied things up for MSSU with a single to the shortstop in the top of the fourth that scored Evan Natick. Gorski would then add an RBI single in the same inning that plated Mitchell Osburn.

Shannon would grab his second RBI of the game in the sixth inning as he drove in Mitchell Osburn. Emporia State would mount a comeback in the bottom of the seventh inning as Jonny Hodges used a single to left center to cut the lead to one. Price Jacobs then homered to left field to make it a 5-4 lead for the Hornets heading to the eighth.

The Lions would then tie things back up in the top of the eighth inning as Jon Davis used a sacrifice fly to score Axel Johnson. Bryant would then add an RBI with a walk that scored Gorski to regain the lead for MSSU.

Natick would add some insurance as he scored Jesse Rall and Chris Hoffman on a two run single to right as the Lions heads to the bottom of the eighth. Evan Koehler would cut the lead to 8-6 in the bottom of the eight inning with a home run to the left field corner.

ESU would cut the lead to just two as Aaron Gile singled up the middle to drive in Cody Bobbit. Dean Long would then hit a three run home run to left field scoring Justin Harris and Levi Parker. The home run tied the MIAA single season record currently held by ESU’s Eric Shortell which he set during the 2008 season.

The two teams will face off on May 10 at 1 p.m. from CommunityAmerica Ballpark in Kansas City, Kan.
