Kansas City, Kan. – Emporia State put up five runs in the first inning and made it hold up in a 6-5 win over Washburn at the MIAA Baseball Tournament.
The Hornets got things started with an RBI ground out by Evan Koihler that was followed by an RBI single from Tory Bell. Cody Bobbit doubles down the first base line which scored Bell and Koehler and Levi Parker singled to the shortstop to make it a 5-0 first inning.
Tanner Johnson started the Washburn answer in the top of the second with sacrifice fly to center field. Paker Gibson then doubled to left center to cut the lead to just 5-3 as the inning came to a close a batter later. Gibson would add another RBI on a single that scored Payton Soicher in the top of the fourth inning.
For the Hornets Dean Long would tack on some insurance in the bottom of the seventh inning hitting a home run to deep left field. David Gauntt would cut the lead to one with an RBI in the top of the ninth inning.
On the mound Garrett Brummett pitching two innings of relief to pick up the win and Shawn Talkington came on the for the save.
ESU now advances to take on Missouri Southern in the MIAA Championship game scheduled for a 2:30 p.m. first pitch.
