Kansas City, Kan. – Missouri Southern erased a 6-1 deficit to earn a 10-7 victory in the second round of the MIAA Baseball Tournament.
Washburn got the scoring started in the top of the first inning as Riley Krane opened with a double and scored on a Parker Gibson ground out. David Gauntt would follow that up with a solo home run to left field.
Missouri Southern would answer with one run in the bottom half of the inning as Jesse Rall singled to drive in Chris Hoffman. Washburn would then grab four runs in the top of the second as Payton Soicher drove in Tanner Triggs, Riley Krane drove in Payton Soicer and Tanner Johnson and WU had an unearned run.
MSSU would cut into the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning starting with a long home run to left center by Jesse Rall. Axel Johsnon would then single to left center driving in Evin Natick and Jacob Bryant.
The Lions would take the lead in the bottom of the sixth as two runs scored unearned to open the inning. Richie Gorskie and Jess Rall would plate two more runs on RBI singles.
David Gauntt cut the lead to 8-7 with his second home run of the game in the top of the eighth inning. Missouri Southern would put the game away for good with a two run double by Evin Natick in the bottom half of that frame.
On the mound for the Lions Tyler Burgess pitched seven innings of relief striking out nine and allowing just four hits and one run to earn the win.
MSSU will await the winner of ESU/UCM tomorrow in the winner’s bracket and scheduled 2:00 p.m. game of the day. WU will face the loser of tonight’s game in tomorrow’s first game, which is currently scheduled for 10:30 a.m. from CommunityAmerica Ballpark in Kansas City, Kan.
