Kansas City, Mo. – The top seeds all advanced as the first round of the MIAA Men’s Basketball Tournament came to a close.
#6 Nebraska-Kearney 90, #11 Southwest Baptist 74
Sixth seeded Nebraska-Kearney shot .574 from the field as they as defeated #11 Southwest Baptist in the opening round of the MIAA Men’s Basketball Touranment.
For the Lopers Connor Beranek led the way with 26 points and nine rebounds while Trey Lansman added 16 points and eight boards. Ethan Brozek finished with 15 points, Ty Danielson had 15 points and Isaiah McKay added 13 points.
For the Bearcats Daymond Cowlah led the way with 14 points and Derrick Stewart finished with 13 points. Quinton Smith had 11 points while Menas Stephens had seven rebounds and dished out a team best five assists.
The Lopers advance to take on third seeded Missouri Southern at 8:15 p.m. on March 5 from Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City.
#8 Washburn 66, #9 Fort Hays State 57
Eighth seeded Washburn scored 20 points off of turnovers and got 21 bench points as they defeated #9 Fort Hays State to advance in the MIAA Tournament.
For the Ichabods Alex North led the way scoring 18 points, pulling down nine rebounds and adding two steals. Kyle Wiggins had 13 points and six rebounds while Kevin House finished with a game high six assists.
The Tigers were led by Achoki Moikobu who had 22 points while James Fleming dished out a team best four assists. Jake Stoppel had a double-double in the game scoring 12 points and pulling down a game high 12 rebounds.
The Ichabods move on to face top seeded Northwest Missouri at 12 noon on Thursday, March 5 from Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City.
#5 Pittsburg State 69, #12 Northeastern State 54
Fifth seeded Pittsburg State racked up 22 points off of turnovers as they defeated #12 Northeastern State to move on the tournament.
For the Gorillas Devon Branch and Trey Starks led the way with 13 points each on the night. Josiah Gustafson had 11 points and Dakota Jones added 10 points while on the glass Denton Hays pulled down nine rebounds.
For the RiverHawks Demone Harrison led the way with 13 points while Amir Gilliam dished out a game high six assists. Montre Williams added 10 points while on the glass Gilliam had nine boards and Keon Littleton pulled down six rebounds.
The Gorillas move on to face fourth seeded Lindenwood on March 5 at 2:15 p.m. from Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City.
#7 Central Oklahoma 72, #10 Missouri Western 72
Seventh seeded Central Oklahoma got a lay up with 11 seconds to play as they defeated #10 Missouri Western in the first round of the MIAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.
For the Bronchos Seth Heckart led the way with 19 points and Cal Andrews finished with 12 points. Phillip Brown had a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds as Trai Jordan also finished with 10 boards.
For the Griffons Cortrez Colbert had 25 points and pulled down a team best eight rebounds. Hans Thun had 13 points and Cole Clearman finished with 12 points while Aaron Emmanuel dished out eight assists.
The Bronchos will move on to face second seeded Central Missouri at 6 p.m. on March 5 from Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City.
