Warrensburg, Mo. – It was close, but Nebraska-Kearney earned some points in pivotal matches to claim their third straight MIAA Tournament title. Lindenwood finished in second with Fort Hays State finishing in third overall.
Central Oklahoma’s Chase Watson won at 157 pounds and was named the MIAA Wrestler of the Year. Tyler Mies of Newman won the MIAA Championship at 149 pounds which was good enough to give him Freshman of the Year honors. Chad Smith, head coach of the Lindenwood Lions, led his team to a regular season title and MIAA Coach of the Year honors.

Conner Bolling of Nebraska-Kearney pinned Marco Tamayo of Lindenwood to win the MIAA Championship at 125 pounds. Tamayo grabbed the first points of the match grabbing a two-point takedown before Bolling answered with an escape. Tamayo then grabbed two more points on a first period takedown, but Bolling answered with the escape. With an injury point Tamayo held a 5-2 lead after one period. Bolling would earn the pin at 4:09 in the match to erase Tamayo’s lead. Zach D’Amico of Central Oklahoma defeated Malacai Collins of Central Missouri to take third place.

Daniel DeShazer of Nebraska-Kearney earned the MIAA Championship over Central Oklahoma’s Dustin Reed. Action was calm in the first period as neither wrestler left his feet and it ended in a 0-0 tie. DeShazer earned the first points of the match with an escape early in the second frame. The score would stay that way as DeShazer led 1-0 going in the final period of regulation. Reed answered with an escape of his own to start the third period. The two stayed tied through regulation at 1-1 forcing some extra wrestling. DeShazer got the take-down 27 second into the overtime to earn the MIAA title. Hunter Haralson of Lindenwood defeated Garrett Jones of Fort Hays State to claim third place.

Noah Killip of Fort Hays State earned a 3-1 win over Lindenwood’s Kyle Webb to claim the MIAA Championship. Neither wrestler scored in the first period. Reed got three points of back time early in the second period which gave him the 3-0 lead when the period ended. Webb picked up a point on a stalling warning to cut into the lead and make it 3-1. Keith Surber of Nebraska-Kearney pinned Josh Durham of Central Oklahoma in 6:26 to earn third place.

Tyler Mies of Newman got a pin at the 6:34 mark to earn the MIAA Championship over Destin McCauley of Nebraska-Kearney. Mies scored two points early with a takedown and McCauley answered with a reversal to make it 2-2 in the first. Mies would take the lead back with an escape later in the period. A takedown for McCauley would make it 4-3 as the two went to the second period. McCauley would get another point to advance his lead with an escape in the second. Mies got the easy escape to open the third and cut into the lead. He then got a take down right off that to take the lead, only to be tied by a McCauley escape. Mies then got the pin at 6:34 to take the victory. Joey Dozier of Fort Hays State came from behind to defeat Lindenwood’s Jared Mestas for third place.

Chase White of Nebraska-Kearney defeated Derrick Weller of Lindenwood 5-3 in a pivotal match to claim the title. Another period saw a calm start as neither wrestler could earn a point through one. Weller got the escape early in the second to take a 1-0 lead, White would answer with two points on a reversal to take a 2-1 lead into the third. An escape from Weller would knot things up early in the third. The tie would hold up and force overtime between the two. After the sudden death proved fruitless an escape from Weller gave him the early OT lead. White would tie it up with an escape of his own and then earned a stall point to take the lead. A final two point takedown would give him the final tally. Jeromy Davenport of Central Oklahoma defeated Bradley Little of Fort Hays State to earn third place.

Chase Watson of Central Oklahoma used a 6-2 decision to claim the MIAA title over Lindenwood’s Kyle Jolas. A wild first period did not produce any points in the match. A takedown in the second period gave Jolas a 2-0 lead, but Watson earned a reversal to tie the score. They remained tied as they headed into the third period. Choosing the down position Watson would take the lead with an escape. A takedown from Watson would them gain him two more points and increase his lead. Devin Aguirre of Nebraska-Kearney defeated Josh Thomson of Central Missouri in the third place match.

Archie Williams of Central Missouri earned a 7-5 win in sudden take down overtime over Josh Rodriguez of Fort Hays State. No one would find a foothold as they two competitors left the period with a 0-0 tie. A two-point reversal by Williams opened the scoring in the second. A quick escape by Rodriguez would cut lead in half. To start the third Rodrigues took the down position and used an escape to tie the score. Willams got the first takedown of the match to take a 4-2 lead. Rodriguez would cut it back to one with an escape off the restart. A takedown for Rodriguez late in the period would give him a 5-4 advantage. Williams would escape with almost no time left to force a sudden takedown overtime. Williams would take down Rodrigues early in the overtime to earn the win. Bachkuluu Zalkhuu of Lindenwood defeated Chance Bila of Nebraska-Kearney with some late points to claim third place.

Jon Inman of For Hays State defeated John McArdle to earn the MIAA Championship. A takedown for Inman would get the scoring started at 2-0 in the first period. McArdle would then earn an escape to cut his lead in half. That would be the score heading into the second period before McArdle tied it with an escape. A reversal for Inman would give him a 4-2 lead and back time made it 6-2 in the second. The score would remain at 6-2 Inman as they headed to the third period. McArdle got a point back with an escape to cut the lead to three points. He would get two more on a takedown before giving away an escape , then forcing another takedown to tie it up. It would be an 8-7 win for Inman with riding time being over one minute as the match concluded. Nebraska-Kearney’s Casey Powell defeated Central Oklahoma’s Caleb Hawes in the third place match.

Romero Cotton of Nebraska-Kearney earned a major decision victory at 13-2 over Fort Hays State’s Cash Drylie. Cotton would start with two points on a takedown early in the match. He would then bank nearly three minutes of ride time to close out the first period. An early escape in the second gave Cotton the 3-0 edge. Two more for Cotton made it 5-0 in the second period as he started banking more ride time. Another takedown started the third period and made it a 7-0 lead before a Drylie escape made it a 7-1 tally. Another takedown and three back points gave Cotton a 12-1 advantage before it became 12-2 with a Drylie escape. He would earn a extra point with ride time as the match finished. In the third place match Kenny Breaux of Lindenwood defeated Central Oklahoma’s Michael Conner.

Trey Page won by technical fall over Jacob Borgmeyer of Lindenwood to win the MIAA Championship. Page started out with a takedown giving hime a 2-0, and took two more points of back time. He would then earn two points from stalling warnings to give him the 6-0 edge through one period. Page opened the second period with a takedown to extend his lead. He would maintain a 9-0 lead as the two went into the third frame. He took an escape and a takedown before earning three back points to make his lead 14-0 late in the third. De’quence Goodman of Central Missouri pinned Central Oklahom’s Kyle Factor to claim third place.
