Kansas City, Mo. – The last three opening round series came to a close today, with the field of four for next week’s MIAA Baseball Tournament set. The opening round of the tournament on May 8 will feature Northeastern State against Missouri Western and Emporia State taking on Central Oklahoma.
#4 Missouri Western 5, #5 Southwest Baptist 4 (10)
It took extra innings, but Missouri Western got a run in the bottom of the tenth inning to punch their ticket to Springfield. MWSU answered the bell twice erasing both a 3-1 and 4-3 deficit to force extra innings.
David Chew went three for five and drove in the game-winning run as one of his two RBI. Cody Childs was four for five and scored three runs as well as hitting a home run. For the Bearcats Zach Pirrello was three for five and drove in two runs on the afternoon. Mason Queen pitched the final three innings allowing just one hit to pick up the victory.
#8 Northeastern State 11, #1 Central Missouri 10
Eighth seeded Northeastern State got three runs in the first, second and fifth inning as they pulled off an upset sweep of top seeded Central Missouri. NSU got only 12 hits, but five of them went for extra bases as they won two straight over the Mules.
At the plate Bryce Davenport was two for five with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored. Cody Robinson went three for five with a home run and also drove in three runs. Cody Begovich was two for five and scored three runs in the ballgame. For UCM Jake Alexander was four for six with two runs scored and two runs driven in. Kevin Gratza also had two RBI as Seth Wheeler and Hunter Johnson each recorded three hits.
On the mound Ryan Helsley recorded the win working six innings and allowing just four earned run while Cayle Shambaugh came on to get the save.
#2 Emporia State 3, #7 Washburn 2
Second seed Emporia State got runs in both the bottom of the seventh and eighth inning as the punched their ticket to Springfield. The Hornets posted eight hits and took advantage of two Ichabod errors.
For ESU Justin Harris was two for four and drove in a d run with Aaron Gile going two for four and scoring a run. For the Ichabods Parker Gibson not only scored a run, but drove one in as well. On the mound ESU closer Brenton Higgins came on to pitch the final 3.2 innings allowing just one hit and striking out two to pick up the win.
