Springfield, Mo. – Southwest Baptist was strong through doubles to claim the 2014 MIAA Women’s Tennis Tournament Championship with a win over Northeastern State. It is the fourth straight MIAA Tournament Championship for the Bearcats.
In doubles Fanni Varga and Christina Zentai got things going with an 8-3 victory at #1 doubles over Valeriia Efimenko and Martina Bruzikova. NSU would answer with an 8-2 victory at #2 by Barbora Jirickova and Kristina Savchenkov over Mehak Singh and Lani Tuemmers. Finally at the #3 slot Paula Carvajaleno and Andjela Panovski came out with an 8-5 win over Houda Bellamine and Maria Lodge.
In singles Mehak Singh got things going out of the game with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) win at the #2 slot. NSU would answer as at #4 singles Martina Bruzikova earned a 6-3, 6-2 win. At #6 Southwest Baptist would put the match within one of a clinch as Zorana Jovanovic would pull out a 6-2, 6-4 win. Finally #1 Fanni Varga would ice the match with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 victory.
Nebraska-Kearney defeated Emporia State 5-4 to take third place in the league tournament.
