Springfield, Mo. – Southwest Baptist and Northeastern State got strong play to earn spots in the MIAA Women’s Tennis Championship.
NSU 5, ESU 1
Northeastern State got strong play from the middle of their line-up as they defeated ESU 5-1 in the MIAA Women’s Tennis Championship.
Northeastern State got the scoring started at #1 doubles as Martina Bruzikova and Valeriia Efimenko grabbed an 8-5 victory. At #2 doubles Barbora Jirickova and Kristina Savchenkov earned an 8-4 win. ESU would answer in #3 doubles as Somer Schmidt and Amy Fugit got the 8-5 tally.
In singles Valeriia Efimenko started off with a 6-4, 6-1 victory at the #3 spot. Matrina Bruzikova cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win at #4 singles. Kristina Savchenkov close things out with a 6-4, 6-4 win on the #1 court.
SBU 5, UNK 2
Southwest Baptist used the strength at the top of their line-up to earn a spot in the MIAA Women’s Tennis Championship.
Fanni Varga and Christina Zentai got the scoring started with an 8-3 win at #1 doubles. In the #2 spot Mehak Singh and Lani Tuemmers pulled out the 8-2 win. Nebraska-Kearney rebounded and got a point back at #3 doubles as Paula Jimenez and Renee Hoekstra came back with an 8-3 tally.
In singles Fanni Varga and Mehak Singh both had 6-1, 6-1 wins in the #1 and #2 spots. UNK would answer with a point of their own at #6 singles as Kari Emery defeated Zorana Jovanovic 6-0, 6-0 to cut into the SBU lead. Lani Tuemmers would the close it out at #4 singles with a 7-5, 6-4 win.
Southwest Baptist and Northeastern State will face off for the second straight year with the MIAA Women’s Tennis Championship on the line, tomorrow at 9 a.m. from the Cooper Tennis Complex. Emporia State and Nebraska-Kearney will face off for third place at the same time.
