After an 11-5 loss in the first game Tuesday afternoon forced a decisive championship game, Central Missouri bounced back in the second game to defeat Abilene Christian, 11-4, and advance to the NCAA Division II World Series.

Central Rolls to 18-7 Win, Regional Final Berth
An offensive explosion in the third, fourth, sixth and seventh innings gave Central Missouri the easy road to the NCAA Division II World Series. In the winner’s bracket game of the South Central Regional, the Mules recovered from an early three-run deficit and beat Incarnate Word 18-7 Monday afternoon at Crane Stadium.

During his days running the hurdles at Lee’s Summit North, Darius Walker never glanced at the throwers. He might have zoomed right past them without seeing them. Walker was so fast that he won Missouri state titles in the 110-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles.

More than 12 minutes remained in the game. Washburn led the Central Missouri women by five when junior Hope Gregory dashed some hope from the Jennies. Gregory dribbled the ball at the top of the key and then between her legs, stepped back before dropping in a long, three-pointer for Washburn.

Washburn’s women’s basketball team scored the first six points, and that announced to Northwest Missouri that it was going to take a special effort to beat the Lady Blues. It was Washburn that was special on defense. The Lady Blues held Northwest Missouri to 24 percent shooting in the first half and took a 15-point lead into halftime.

MIAA player of the year Cassondra Boston had a few moments. Nebraska-Omaha recovered from one disastrous stretch in the first half in which it gave up 12 straight points and pulled out a 58-55 road victory against Missouri Western. “What I was happy with was the fact that we came back in the second half and played with some enthusiasm,” Nebraska-Omaha coach Patty Patton Shearer said. “I thought we scrapped harder and we were doing some things defensively to take away some personnel.”

On paper, Fort Hays State, ranked No. 5 in NCAA Division II, should have had an easy game against the below .500 Emporia State Hornets. But life on the road in the MIAA is never easy. Fort Hays found that out Wednesday night in its 69-65 victory at White Auditorium. It was the Tigers’ first victory at Emporia State since joining the MIAA in the 2006-07 season.

Once again Northwest Missouri is Alabama-bound. Northwest Missouri earned its fifth straight appearance in the NCAA Division II championship by thrashing California (Pa.) 56-31 Saturday evening at Bearcat Stadium. Monday was good and bad for Southwest Baptist senior center Matt Rogers. He earned MIAA player of the week for averaging 32 points, 6 blocks and 4.5 rebounds over the weekend in the SBU Thanksgiving Classic. The bad were the last five minutes of practice. Rogers twisted his left ankle.

Southwest Baptist women’s basketball bolted into the Multipurpose Building Wednesday evening and briefly gave a scare to Central Missouri. The Bearcats jumped to a quick eight-point lead. “This is a tough place to play so I was glad we came out and played with confidence,” Southwest Baptist coach J.C. Carter said. But Central Missouri proved it currently has more experienced depth.

Central Missouri held just a two-point lead against Rockhurst midway through the first half when senior forward Sanijay Watts made a comment to a teammate. Watts was at the scorer’s table waiting to re-enter the game when he told his teammate that the Mules should have a bigger lead.

In one respect, Northwest Missouri State didn’t play up to its playoff-caliber sharpness. The Bearcats committed a season-high four turnovers against Abilene Christian. But Northwest Missouri is so good that those miscues didn’t prevent it from hammering Abilene Christian 35-10 in the second round of the NCAA Division II playoffs Saturday afternoon at Bearcat Stadium.
